At Gilbert Inglefield, both summative and formative assessment processes are important.
Summative assessment involves grading against criteria, recording attainment on entry in Year 5 and monitoring progress across Key Stages 2 and 3, comparing attainment and achievement against identified targets (either cohort, individual or national). This is Assessment OF Learning.
Formative assessment is based in everyday classroom activities, providing evidence of what learning is taking place. It supports teachers and pupils in coming to a decision as to what needs to be done to improve. Careful planning, based on assessment, enables pupils to take specific actions that lead to a higher standard. This is Assessment FOR Learning.
