Welcome to the Physical Education department.
The Gilbert Inglefield Faculty of Physical Education and Sport is committed to providing a broad and balanced programme of activities that, through high quality teaching, actively engages, challenges, motivates and continually develops all its students.
We encourage all pupils to enjoy, succeed and excel in PE and we provide the opportunity for all our pupils to become physically confident in a way that supports their health and fitness. Our School Games Values are embedded in our lessons, helping to build character and promote a desire for lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.
Our curriculum gives pupils the opportunity to:
- Develop confidence in, enjoy, and excel in a wide range of activities
- Be physically active for a sustained period of time
- Engage in and enjoy competitive sports and activities
- Lead healthy and active lives
At Key Stage 2
Pupils will develop a wide range of skills whilst learning how to use those skills in different ways. They will link their skills to make actions and sequences of movement. They will develop communication and collaboration skills whilst competing with each other. They will also learn to improve in different physical activities and sports and will learn to evaluate and recognise their own success.

At Key Stage 3
Pupils will embed and build on the physical development and skills they achieved in Key Stage 2 to become more confident and competent. They will apply the techniques they learn to different sports and activities. They will understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles to their own and others' work. They will develop the confidence and interest to participate in exercise and sport outside school, both now and in later life, and will understand the long term health benefits of physical activity.

Aims of PE at Gilbert Inglefield
A high-quality PE curriculum taught by skilled specialist staff enables all pupils to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity. They develop a wide range of skills and the ability to use tactics, strategies and compositional ideas to perform successfully. When they are performing, they think about what they are doing, analyse the situation and make decisions. They also reflect on their own and others performances and find ways to improve them. As a result, they develop the confidence to take part in different physical activities and learn about the value of healthy, active lifestyles. Discovering what they like to do, what their aptitudes are at school and how and where to get involved in physical activity helps them make informed choices about lifelong physical activity.
PE helps pupils develop personally and socially. They work as individuals, in groups and in teams, developing concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility. They take on different roles and responsibilities including leadership, coaching and officiating. Through the range of experiences that PE offers, they learn how to be effective in competitive, creative and challenging situations.
These are the essential skills and processes in PE that pupils need to learn to make progress.
ALL students have a minimum of 4 hours per fortnight of PE and/or Dance lessons with a variety of sports and activities delivered by qualified staff.
Both indoor and outdoor activities are taught with competitive games, racket sports, individual performance sports and fitness on offer across the key stage.
A range of extra-curricular activities, sports and fixtures are also on offer after school with fixtures versus local, regional and national schools.
The PE Department have gained the Gold Kitemark award which reflects the vast opportunities that all pupils can receive at Gilbert Inglefield.
